I was invited by Director Matt Hopkins and Producer Joe Binks to join them as editor on a Short Series of Films focusing on Renweable energy solutions being developed and currently in operations. A short doc style series for BBC Storyworks there were two phases of the project I was involved in, both Pre-Production preparing assets for the LED Volume, and then taking responsibility for editing one of the three final films.
The experience was fast paced and turned around in a flash from conceptualising the LED content to delivering the episodes edit. Matt is a phenomenal director who knows what he wants an a clear communication style that meant we could make progress quickly. It was a blessing to work alongside such a proactive and talented team and I look forward to more commercial doc work in the future.
The first phase of the project requires 5 key LED Volume compilations to be created that each episodes protagonist would be enveloped in as the films story unfoldes. The volume itself as four sides of a cube, front, sides, and floor. They would be 4 seperate video feeds and so it was important that we connect the visuals. To do this we conceptualised them as a large single piece using a custom arrangement in the edit and then rendered them as individual passes. To accompany these key assets we also created dozens of smaller pieces that the Director and DP could access onsite to accentuate and adapt to the evolving story on set as they responded to the talent.
For the deliverables I was made responsible for one of the three films in the series. The key challenge here was taking over an hour interview takes and condensing that down into a cohesive and emotive story, especially with a speaker who found it challenging at times to express himself as eloquently as he would like in English. The cutting visuals and sound design we carved around this narrative structure to support and emphasise the key points as well as creating light and shade in the tone.
